A true leader according to the renowned management guru Peter Drucker is someone who can “lift a person’s vision to higher sights, raise a person’s performance to a higher standard, build a person’s personality beyond its normal limitations…” The story of Dr Lalit Kumar Malhotra, currently Chairman & Managing Director, Hotel The Suryaa, New Delhi and Immediate Past President, PHD Chamber of Commerce and Industry (PHDCCI), has also been on parallel lines. All through his multi-faceted life as entrepreneur, businessman, hotelier and industrialist he has cruised ahead as a visionary leader moulding personalities as a gifted sculptor as he goes along building one business after another in different streams. Full of enterprise and a focused thinker, Dr Malhotra has an uncanny knack of giving his businesses a purposeful momentum and a sustainable people orientation. He is also technology perceptive and has excellent financial acumen.
Dr Lalit Kumar Malhotra was born in Chakwal (Dist, Jhelum) Pakistan on February 7, 1944 to a family of five brothers and one sister. After Independence, the family migrated to Old Delhi and settled to an eventful innings in trading in consumer products. Dr Malhotra’s father, Late Dr Amar Nath Malhotra was a gutsy entrepreneur while his mother, Late Mrs. Melan Devi Malhotra was a religious and social lady. Perhaps he imbibed the positive qualities of daring entrepreneure and innate love for jelling with people from his respective parents.
Dr Malhotra did his schooling in Ramjas School followed by graduation from Hindu College, postgraduation and Hony Ph.D in Business Management from Burkes University.
Cutting teeth in business in Kuwait
As an NRI, Dr Malhotra launched himself in their family managed business in Kuwait in 1964 during his early youth when he started looking after the Sales & Marketing division of M/s A.N. Malhotra & Sons which dealt in trading, import, export and distribution of consumer products. He did so for nearly a decade before he became a managing partner of Traveller Trading Company engaged in marketing of travellers accessories. This could hold his attention for three years. For the next four years he took up the challenge of becoming a managing partner of Seven Seas International, a company involved in the business of shipping, trading, import, export and construction.
Little did Dr Malhotra know that destiny had grander designs for him back in India. He did a marvellous job of being a managing partner for M/s Ashraf & Malhotra for his next four years in Kuwait when he steered the company’s business of car accessories and parts to great heights.

Also present during this high profile event were Dr. Farooq Abdullah Union Minister for New & Renewable Energy., Govt of India along with Dr. Karan Singh Member of Parliament Rajya Sabha and the President ICCR.
Embracing Hoteliering in India
Dr Malhotra’s constant urge to involve himself neck-deep in fresh challenges and get his feet wet brought him to India in 1985. This marked Dr Malhotra’s epoch-making entry into managing a hospitality business. With more than two decades of variegated international business experience behind him Dr Malhotra started putting together the jigsaw pieces of a an immensely successful stint in hoteliering in an elegant fashion.
Indeed a shining symbol of Dr Malhotra’s mega-innovations and unmistakable business prowess, The Suryaa New Delhi (earlier known as Hotel Crowne Plaza and Hotel Sofitel Surya and presently a unit of CHL Ltd.) today stands majestically tall, head and shoulders above its competitors. Under Dr Malhotra’s dedicated leadership, the Hotel has been carving ahead an enviable image for itself amongst the domestic as well as international travellers. In fact it has also become a pet project for Dr Malhotra who has been committed to its success with heart and body as well as mind and soul, choosing to be with it till date. (He took over the reins as Managing Director in July 1985)
Not the one to rest on his laurels, Dr Malhotra has also set up another hotel of 104 rooms at Ghaziabad (UP) under the rubric of Mela Plaza.
Doing India mighty proud
With the bifurcation of USSR and formation of various countries under CIS back in late nineties, Dr Malhotra took active interest in promoting relations between India and Tajikistan and has been able to arrange Government level discussions between the GoI and Tajikistan. An agreement has been reached with the Tajikistan Government to provide turnkey Consultancy and Construction services for a 5 star Hotel of international standard, Glass factory, Food processing, and Brewery and Distillery industry. The complete technology as well as equipment along with other major supplies for the aforementioned projects are to be sourced from India. Cumulative Project Cost works out to be around US$ 300 millions.
Dr Malhotra has visited Tajikistan a number of times and liaised well with senior officials and ministers of the Tajikistan Government. No wonder, in 1994, through a Presidential decree issued by the President of the Republic of Tajikistan, Dr Malhotra was appointed as Honorary Consul of Tajikistan for India and continued in the distinguished position for around nine years till they opened their Embassy in New Delhi in 2003.

Dr Malhotra holds the position of Director for Mela Hotels Ltd., Mohan Meakins Ltd., Credit Capital Investment Trust Co. Ltd., Mohan Rocky Springwater Breweries Ltd, ICS (India) Pvt. Ltd., Malbros Capital Services (P) Ltd., Kyjol Entertainment Media (P) Ltd., CHL International and CHL (South) Hotels Ltd. He is also a partner with Ultima Leasing & Financing. Currently he is Immediate Past President for the leading industrial and commerce body, PHD Chamber of Commerce & Industry (PHDCCI). Prior to this he has also been Managing Committee Member and Chairman, International Affairs (Commerce) for Asia-Oceania Region. He has also been Chairman, Expert Committee on Tourism with ASSOCHAM.
Business mind with a Social heart
Dr Malhotra is associated with a number of philanthropic social societies and Clubs. Apart from being President for Forum for Better Delhi and Secretary for Indo Kuwait NRI Forum, he cherishes serving the needy as Chairman for Mataji Melan Devi Society (Regd.), a charitable outfit named after his mother.
Dr Malhotra is a social person at heart and has a wide circle of friends and associates which includes Mr Raghupati Singhania, Mr R.P. Goenka, Mr K P Singh, Mr Arun Kapoor, Mr Kashi Bhimani,
Mr Lalit Khaitan, Dr Analjit Singh, and Mr P.K. Rajgarhia just to name a few. He was known closely to Late Dr Parvinder Singh and Late Mr Raunaq Singh family and is quite popular among contemporaries. He has good political clout and is close to ruling party’s.
